Presentations
As we’ve covered multiple times on the blog, PechaKucha was in Milan last month for the Milano Salone (Milan Design Week), with a series of four PechaKucha events held at Heineken’s temporary club space, designed by up-and-coming creators who were selected through a series of PechaKucha events in four cities. In this presentation (from PKN Tokyo Vol. 91), Jean Snow gives you a taste of what the events were like, and slips in a few design week-related slides as well.

So you think you know about wine? Sommelier Fabien Jacob definitely knows a thing or two about the process of making wine, and in this presentation (from PKN San Antonio Vol. 5), he shows you what that process looks like. He also ends up explaining the types of grapes used, and famous winemaking regions.

As you saw yesterday, it’s a busy week for PKNs — and it’s been a great month, with well over 80 events on the calendar — and we’ve got lots more coming tomorrow (May 24): PKN Lucerne Vol. 4, PKN Koszalin Vol. 9, PKN Coruna Vol. 6, PKN Barcelona Vol. 16, and PKN Curitiba Vol. 2. Presentations
João Nunes is an architect, and in this presentation (in Italian, from PKN Catania Vol. 10) he talks about the challenges involved in working with landscapes. This usually means having to balance elements such as time, conditions, and the type of terrain, along with very different materials. In “A Rough Guide to Wakefield Kirkgate” (from PKN Barnsley Vol. 4), Sharon Shepherds shares a few ideas on what could be done to make the historic Wakefield Kirkgate station look better.

We shared a report by PKN Gothenburg organizer Jesper Larsson recently (about the city’s recent Vol. 31), and here’s a follow-up on the topic of instant inspiration:

Sometimes inspiration travels fast. The day after PKN Gothenburg Vol. 31, presenter and sushi chef José Seruda went out in the city to find edible ingredients inspired by Klara Hansson who presented about “The edible city” the same night, and during the beer break served up a ‘Kokoro salad‘ based on wild city plants.

José’s own hunt resulted in a brand new starter dish using Daisy, Garlic-mustard flower and Dandelion Leaf served as part of the omakase offering the same night at his restaurant Hoze. I’m guessing it’s this kind of passion for experimentation with ingredients and flavors that might be the reason many consider Hoze one of Sweden’s best sushi restaurants.

Below is a video of Klara going hunting for wild plants in Gothenburg city on a previous occasion and within 30 minutes serving up a fresh mushroom salad.

Presentations
Doreen Toutikian thinks that design can change the world for the better, and that’s what she hopes to achieve with her “Rethinking Design Through Cross-Cultural Collaboration” project — see her describe it in this presentation from PKN Beirut Vol. 13. Sebastian Alvarez loves animation, and that could help explain how he ended up becoming an animator. He uses this presentation (from PKN Miami Vol. 14) to describe the main principles behind animation, and shows how all animated forms (2D, CG) can be used to tell stories in original and creative ways.

PKN Sacramento organizer Claire Obenson reports on the city’s recent Vol. 17:

There were presentations from creative professions across the spectrum, such as a playwright, David Blue Garrison, host of the event, who showed posters of his work; there was Andrea Lepore, the creative director for a well known restaurant, Hot Italian, who showed her plans for a well known strip, called Del Paso Blvd; we had Melissa Magliola who showed off her new company, Compliment Rings, whose proceeds “give back” to the community; Veronica Delgado, the great publicist and Artist Agent showed off her endeavours and volunteering efforts; Famed architect, Owen T. Jones presented images about “inside versus outside” spaces; Dennis Dong, another famed architect and PK Night veteran presenter showed off his anonymous spaces and lastly, Marvin Maldonado presented images from his wife’s new boutique, Gypsy Mobile Boutique, Sacramento’s first mobile boutique.

Overall, this was one of the most interesting PK Nights we have ever held and thanks to all who participated!

In “Underground Food” (in Portuguese), Guilherme Caldas takes us on a tour Curitiba’s lesser known culinary highlights. If you’ve been feeling like you need to get a bit more excitement in your day, try following Niall Doherty and his “Random Acts of Courage.”

Tonight (Monday, May 21) you have your choice of the very first PechaKucha Night in the city of Muscat, Oman, or another blockbuster PKN (Vol. 13) in Tel Aviv. Tomorrow (May 22), Montreal will be hosting its Vol. 22, and Dnipropetrovsk, Ukraine — how’s that for a mouthful — will have its first PKN. 

Presentations
The first of our two presentations today, “Inside Wood and Paint: The Heart of Making,” comes from PKN Taos Vol. 3, and sees Patti Tronolone sharing her paintings and furniture pieces, linking the latter to her love of nature. The second presentation is Kotama Bouabane’s “Chinese’s Replication of Orange County” (PKN Toronto Vol. 15) in which he reveals a Beijing suburb that was made to look like Orange County in California.

Today’s two presentations come your way from Koszalin and Dayton. The one from Koszalin is by none other than PKN Koszalin organizer Gall Podlaszewski, and was done as part of our Global Cities Week. So follow Gall as she talks about her city (in Polish), PechaKucha-style. From Dayton, we get beer afficionado Max Spang who in “What the Hell Is Beer?” will go to great lengths to prove just how much he loves beer (and he’s not alone).

On the poster front today, we’ve added three new ones, including posters for the upcoming collaboration between PKN Istanbul and PKN Yerevan (which this time, is an invitation-only event — pictured above is the poster from the Yerevan side), and the poster for tonight’s PKN Taos Vol. 6, celebrating “the remarkable women of Taos.”

On April 24th, we arranged our Vol. 31 of PechaKucha Gothenburg with a great turnout!

Annelie Hulthén used mobile photos to show some of the backsides of the life of a politician. Our new city architect showed aerial photos of Gothenburg to show how much space is wasted on cars instead of human beings. Peter Korn told us about digging and how to plant exotic plants on stony Swedish hillsides. Sushi chef José Seruda spoke about “omakase” and his idea of Scandinavian sushi using locally produced fish and seafood. Siv Burell talked about the language Esperanto which celebrates 125 years this year. Klara Hansson spoke about perma culture and what’s edible within the city centre. Jeanette Fagerström told the story that led up to her opening a sewing machine café in Gothenburg (similar to an internet café but with sewing machines instead of computers). Helena Andersson, Sebastian Popescu & Evelina Valtersson finished of the evening with a presentation about their project “Bostadsrotation” (residential rotation) where people change housing and routines with another person for a couple of days.

In the break, Klara Hansson and her friends served up a ‘Kokoro salad‘ based on wild city plants such as Garlic-mustard, Celandine, Common wood sorrel, Dandelion, Sorrel, Lady’s Mantle, Daisy, Rowan Leaf, Ground elder and last but not least Lovage. They also served fresh natural birch sap. In this walkthrough video during the beer break, organizer Jesper Larsson tries out the birch sap and talks to former presenter Sebastian Näslund about it.

We totally forgot to celebrate it, but the last presentation of the evening was actually #300 since we started!

Today you can hear Antonin Gaultier talk about his new digital Tokyo fashion magazine, De Rigueur (available for Kindle), and Tokyo-based designer Ian Lynam shares some of the magazine titles that have had a big impact on him.

Here we have a report from PKN Nishinomiya organizer Brent Jones on the city’s recent PKN Vol. 12:

Friday, April 13 (that’s right . . . Friday the 13th) was another raucous night of creativity and fun at CUBE in Nishinomiya. We continue to attract an eclectic mix of presenters, and this beautiful Spring night was no exception. We started the evening by showing Mark Dytham’s PechaKucha Global Events presentation from the PKN website. We explained to the audience that we are locked into our set events (because our venue is a school), but that we try to promote these events as much as we can. Our first live presenter was Teruko Ashida, who introduced her organic fruit farm in Amagasaki and the events she holds there. Peter Sterlacci followed up with a lively introduction to Personal Branding. Shuji Narita came next with a humorous look at common English mistakes made by Japanese, and he was followed by Carmen Tamas and Shawn White swapping musings about the charms of Japan and Romania. Our Beer Break was followed by a PKN formatted workshop on Old School Hip Hop by Warren Decker. Natsuko Shiraishi then introduced her work with groups of indigenous Mangyan on the island of Mindoro in the Philippines. The audience was then treated to the trials and tribulations of learning how to scull by Richard Miller, and Wes Lang rounded out the night with a poetic look at Unkai, or the sea of clouds that can be viewed from various summits in Japan. We again enlisted the help of several students in introducing the presenters and keeping the evening full of unexpected twists and turns, and are already looking forward to PKN Nishinomiya Volume 13 on July 6th.

Presentations
As we recently covered on the blog, we had a special PechaKucha event this past Friday here in Tokyo, as part of the 10th edition of the Magazine Library exhibition. We invited 5 presenters to cover topics that touch on magazines and print culture, and we’ll be sharing all of them online today and tomorrow. Today, you get to hear Audrey Fondecave talk about the upcoming issue of TOO MUCH (”the magazine of romantic geography”), Mike Abelson talk about his stationery brand Postalco, and a recent printing project he embarked on, and Luis Mendo tells us how Tokyo turned this editorial designer into an artist.
